TĀ O LE TAGATA (Men's Strength Program)

TĀ O LE TAGATA Men’s Strength Program — Strengthening our men. Preserving our culture.

Strengthening our men. Preserving our culture.

A dedicated cultural space for Pacific men to connect, heal, and lead with integrity and purpose. A creative alternative pathway for Pacific men to express emotions through music instead of violence.

Tā o le Tagata — Participant Journey

Tā o le Tagata is a 10-week journey for Pacific men who want to reconnect with the values they were raised with, strengthen their families, and learn safer ways to deal with anger, stress, and pressure. This program uses music, talanoa, culture, emotional regulation, and accountability. You don’t need to be a musician. You just need to show up, be honest, and be willing to try.

The program focuses on

  • Strengthen cultural identity and leadership
  • Support mental wellbeing and housing
  • Practice healthy relationships and fatherhood
  • Discuss substance use and family safety
  • Build bonds and confidence

Our purpose

To help Pacific men express emotions safely, understand their impact on others, and build respectful relationships.

Our beliefs

  • Culture is strength
  • Violence is not our culture
  • Accountability is healing
  • Music helps us express what words cannot
  • Change is possible for every man

Our Talofa Values

  • Alofa — care and compassion, choosing actions that bring peace, not harm
  • Tautua — service and responsibility, showing up and owning your behaviour
  • Fa’aaloalo — respect, listening, dignity, and boundaries
  • Aiga — family and collective strength, protecting the people you love
  • Vā — keeping the space between us safe, honouring connection, not control

What you can expect

  • A safe, respectful space
  • No judgement
  • Clear boundaries
  • Cultural grounding
  • Practical tools you can use at home
  • Music-based activities
  • Honest talanoa
  • Support from facilitators and other men

Your responsibilities

  • Show up each week
  • Participate at your own pace
  • Be respectful
  • Keep confidentiality
  • Take responsibility for your choices
  • Ask for help when you need it

Sessions begin and end with a short prayer. This is optional — you are always welcome to participate in a way that feels right for you. If you come from a different Pacific nation and would like to share the word for these values in your language, that is welcomed.

The 10-week journey

  • Week 1 — The Sound of Anger: understanding anger in the body and noticing early warning signs
  • Week 2 — Beats of Responsibility: naming harmful behaviours and building responsibility without shame
  • Week 3 — The Vā: Impact on Family: understanding relational harm and building empathy
  • Week 4 — Cultural Masculinity: exploring identity, expectations, and cultural narratives
  • Week 5 — Turning Anger into Rhythm: learning safe expression and emotional regulation
  • Week 6 — Turning Hurt into Melody: building emotional literacy and understanding deeper emotions
  • Week 7 — Respect & Communication: listening, speaking, and building respectful communication
  • Week 8 — Family Safety: safety planning and taking responsibility for peace at home
  • Week 9 — Healing through Sound: cultural healing, identity, and purpose
  • Week 10 — My Change Track: consolidation and committing to ongoing change

After completing the 10-week journey, participants and their partners are invited to a free Cultural Performance Night hosted by Talofa Aiga Café. This night is Talofa’s way of giving back to the community and celebrating growth as Pacific men. Participants may share their Change Track, cultural rhythm, or the story behind their signature dish. Attendance is unlimited — men and partners may attend every year, as a long-term cultural tradition for Tā o le Tagata graduates and their families.
